A Component of the Washington Area Leading Index

Residential permits are a component of the Leading Index. They represent the number of permits issued by authorized agencies for residential units, not buildings. If, for example, a building contains 5 apartments, a permit would be issued for 5 units.

The issuance of a permit does not guarantee that construction will take place. Moreover, when builders anticipate a change in requirements, more than the normal number of permits may be issued prior to that change.

The data are not adjusted for seasonal variation.
