A Component of the Washington Area Leading Index


Consumer Expectations in the South Atlantic Census Division is a component of the Washington Area Leading Index. This index is a measure the degree
of confidence in the economy approximately 6 to 12 months into the future. Expectations are evaluated with respect to business conditions and employment opportunities.

The index is developed from a sample of 5,000 households and is compiled
for the 9 Census Divisions. The series is  standardized so that the 1985 average for the U.S. is 100.  The South Atlantic Region, as defined by the U.S. Bureau of the Census, includes Delaware, District of Columbia, Florida, Georgia, Maryland, North Caroline, South Carolina, Virginia, and West Virginia.
