A Component of the Washington Area Coincident Index


Consumer Confidence in the South Atlantic Census Division is a component
 of the Washington Area Coincident Index. This index is a measure of consumer optimism toward current economic conditions.  Consumer optimism is considered to be an important indicator of the current health of the economy. 

The index is developed from a sample of 5,000 households and is compiled
for the 9 Census Divisions. The series is  standardized so that the 1985 average for the U.S. is 100.  The South Atlantic Region, as defined by the U.S. Bureau of the Census, includes Delaware, District of Columbia, Florida, Georgia, Maryland, North Caroline, South Carolina, Virginia, and West Virginia.
